OBJ 3D Format

OBJ Converter

An Object file (or OBJ) is a text-based 3D file format, developed by Wavefront Technologies, that represents geometry information alone. This is useful if you want to store complex data for your models, such as vertices, vertex normals and texture coordinates, in a simple format. If you need to transfer shape data between software, OBJ files are easy to parse and can be quickly read and edited by humans. The format is often used for 3D printing, as well as for sharing 3D assets during gaming or VR (virtual reality) development.

OBJ files can be opened by a variety of programs, such as Maya, Blender, Unreal Engine, Autodesk 3ds Max, and other CAD software. The format is compatible with Windows and macOS, as well as many mobile platforms, and its wide compatibility makes it a popular file choice. Its limitations lie within its strengths, however: as OBJ files only contain geometry data, if you need to share animations or material data alongside the shape data for your file, you’ll have to look for an alternative format.

PDF Document Format

PDF Converter

PDF stands for ‘Portable Document Format’ file. It was developed by Adobe so people could share documents regardless of which device, operating system, or software they were using, while preserving the content and formatting. The format has evolved to allow for editing and interactive elements like electronic signatures or buttons. The PDF format is now a standard open format that isn’t just available under Adobe Acrobat. It is maintained by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO).

PDF files aren’t typically created from scratch, but are usually converted, saved or ‘printed’ from other documents or images before sharing, publishing online or storing. They can be viewed on almost all devices. Creating a PDF can involve compressing a file, making it take up less storage space. You would typically create a PDF if you wanted to ensure document fidelity, to make it more secure, or to create a copy for storage.
