As the years have passed the number of audio file formats have multiplied greatly. Audio file formats, like images, tend to exist in either a raw or compressed form, also known as "lossless" or "lossy". Uncompressed formats, such as the WAV and FLAC formats, are the largest in size but provide higher quality audio playback. More widely used are audio formats that have had compression applied to them, such as the popular MP3 file format. These "lossy" formats record audio at a lower quality, but do produce smaller file sizes. In practice advancements in lossy compression mean it is often difficult to notice an appreciable loss in audio quality for these formats. There are many different audio file formats each requiring specific applications to open them, hence the need to convert from one format to another.
