FLAC Audio Format FLAC Converter
An FLAC file has a full name of Free Lossless Audio Codec File and was developed by the Xiph.org foundation. An FLAC file is an open sourced audio file that uses lossless file compression which means that the file has been compressed to make it smaller but without impacting the quality of the file. i.e. it sounds the same but is smaller in size. In some circles it is known as a HD version of an MP3 file because it sounds a lot crisper than an MP3 but the way it has been built means that it tends to be a similar sized file as an MP3. It was developed in the early 2000s and given it’s size, quality and the fact it was open sourced it quickly became a popular alternative to other popular lossless audio formats which were developed at that time.
Another feature of an FLAC file is that it can support metadata and so they’re often used to burn CDs. Almost all open sourced audio players play FLAC files including the VLC Media Player. Other popular programs like QuickTime and Media Player do not play FLAC files.

M4A Audio Format M4A Converter
An M4A file format is also called an MPEG-4 audio file, and is an audio file saved in the MPEG-4 standard. It was developed by Apple, largely as a result of the popularity of the MP3 file. An M4A file is the go-to audio format for compressed audio, due to the creation and popularity of iTunes.
M4A files tend to be encoded using an AAC codec and are small in size because they have been compressed - often providing a smaller file-size footprint than an MP3 file format, while mirroring, if not improving, the quality of an MP3 file. As more and more music was consumed on the go via devices such as iPods and smartphones, the need for small file sizes became greater, which is why an M4A file has grown in popularity and importance.
One downside of an M4A file, especially when compared to an MP3 format, is that it can only be opened by iTunes or Windows Media Player version 12 and later. By comparison, an MP3 file is universally supported.
