ZIP Archive Format ZIP Converter
The ZIP format was created in the late 1980s as a way of compressing files for archiving or sharing. Files are ‘zipped’ up into a new folder, usually saving it into a smaller file size. ZIP uses lossless compression and is reversible, so you can ‘unzip’ the folders and extract files without any impact on quality. As each file is compressed separately during ‘zipping’, you can easily extract or add individual files to a ZIP folder.
ZIP files became more popular with the rise in email use, as it was a simple way to share multiple larger files. The ZIP format is also often used to make back-ups, quickly transfer files between devices, and to allow quicker downloads from websites. Previously, users needed additional software to create ZIP folders. Now most operating systems, including Windows and iOS, let you easily zip and unzip files yourself.

The LZH file format stands for Lempel-Ziv-Haruyasu, and this file type was developed by Israeli computer scientist, Abraham Lempel, and Princeton professor, Jacob Ziv, in the 1970s, and later optimised by Japanese researcher, Haruyasu Yamashita, in the 1980s. The letters ‘LZH’ in the format name stand for Lempel-Ziv-Haruyasu, from these inventors’ names.
