ZIP Archive Format ZIP Converter
The ZIP format was created in the late 1980s as a way of compressing files for archiving or sharing. Files are ‘zipped’ up into a new folder, usually saving it into a smaller file size. ZIP uses lossless compression and is reversible, so you can ‘unzip’ the folders and extract files without any impact on quality. As each file is compressed separately during ‘zipping’, you can easily extract or add individual files to a ZIP folder.
ZIP files became more popular with the rise in email use, as it was a simple way to share multiple larger files. The ZIP format is also often used to make back-ups, quickly transfer files between devices, and to allow quicker downloads from websites. Previously, users needed additional software to create ZIP folders. Now most operating systems, including Windows and iOS, let you easily zip and unzip files yourself.
7Z Archive Format 7Z Converter
The 7Z file format, or 7-Zip compressed file, is an archive file format developed by Igor Pavlov in the late 1990s, and is used for data compression, encryption and pre-processing. 7Z is an open source format based on Pavlov’s own LZMA compression algorithm, which offers a high compression ratio - making it ideal for archiving large amounts of data (supporting files up to 16,000 Petabytes) in a comparatively small file size. 7Z files also have the ability to include strong encryption, full Unicode support, and a high degree of pre-processing.
The 7Z format is particularly popular for storing data, such as documents, images, music and videos, in a single compressed file, but can also be used to compress multiple files into a single package, e.g. for distributing software applications. You can open 7Z files with various applications, including 7-Zip, Corel WinZip and RARLAB WinRAR.
