DescriptionThe portable pixmap format (PPM) is an image format designed to be easily exchanged between platforms which is used by Netpbm - an open-source package of graphics programs and a programming library, used mainly in the Unix world. The format is a lowest common denominator color image file format and is highly inefficient, containing a lot of information the human eye can’t even discern. The precursor to the PPM format was the PBM format which was invented by Jef Poskanzer in the 1980s as a format that allowed monochrome bitmaps to be transmitted within an email message as plain ASCII text, allowing it to survive any changes in text formatting. By the end of 1988, Poskanzer had developed the PGM and PPM formats along with their associated tools and added them to Pbmplus. The final release of Pbmplus was December 10, 1991.

Technical DetailsA PPM file consists of a sequence of one or more PPM images. There are no data, delimiters, or padding before, after, or between images. Each PPM image consists of the following:
  1. A magic number for identifying the file type. A ppm image's magic number is the two characters P6.
  2. Whitespace (blanks, TABs, CRs, LFs).
  3. A width, formatted as ASCII characters in decimal.
  4. Whitespace.
  5. A height, again in ASCII decimal
  6. 6. Whitespace.
  7. The maximum color value (Maxval), again in ASCII decimal. Must be less than 65536 and more than zero.
  8. A single whitespace character (usually a newline).
  9. A raster of Height rows, in order from top to bottom. Each row consists of Width pixels, in order from left to right. Each pixel is a triplet of red, green, and blue samples, in that order. Each sample is represented in pure binary by either 1 or 2 bytes. If the Maxval is less than 256, it is 1 byte. Otherwise, it is 2 bytes. The most significant byte is first.
There is actually another version of the PPM format that is fairly rare: plain PPM format.

DescriptionEPS stands for Encapsulated PostScript. Files of this format have an .eps extension. The file extension was developed by Adobe Systems in 1992. It is a standard format used to import and export a single page of formatted text, images and graphics. EPS files can be placed with another Postscript file. Commonly used in the publishing industry, an advantage of .EPS is that they are Operating System independent, meaning that the file type can be used to send image and graphics to another recipient regardless of OS. Most EPS files contain a bitmap preview. This allows applications that cannot interpret postscript code to render a low resolution version of the file.

Technical DetailsAn EPS file must contain at least two DSC (Document Structuring Conventions) header comments. One that confirms that the file conforms to Version 3.0 of the EPS format and also a Bounding Box comment. The Bounding Box comment defines the values that indicate the size of the image to the application reading the file. A number of optional DSC comments can be added depending on the nature of the EPS. For example the %%Begin(End)Preview denotes the bitmap preview section of the file. Another common optional comment is the %%Extensions: comment. This is used to define language extension requirements. The comments section is also used to denote specific font requirements. Note that including multiple extensions limits the portability of the file and therefore where possible an EPS file should be self contained.
