The SR2 file format was developed by Sony as a proprietary RAW image file format. It contains information captured directly by the CCD sensor of Sony digital cameras and is stored without compression or any effects being applied to it. Most SR2 files are associated with Sonys R1 camera line which is from the companies popular series of digital SLR cameras.
SR2 files are RAW image files which contain unmodified sensor data packaged up with metadata that can be interpreted and adjusted prior to exporting the image to a more common format such as JPEG or TIFF. The SR2 RAW file is stored with 12 to 14 bits per pixel compared to a JPEG which is normally held in 8 bits. This does however mean that SR2 RAW files are up to six times larger than standard JPEG files.
