A WMF file is also known as a Windows Metafile and is a vector image file. WMF files were the precursor to the more popular and more recently developed EMF files. The WMF file format was developed in 1988 and whilst an EMF file supports 32-bit RGB image data, a WMF file supports 16-bit which is one of the major reasons the EMF file was developed. WMF files are like other vector image files in that instead of data being stored in bitmap form, the WMF file is made up of paths connected by different points. This file structure allows users to be able zoom in to any depth and no blurriness occurs. i.e. a user can zoom right into a specific point and be able to see it with absolute clarity. WMF files tend to be used by people who are involved in designing high end images including logos. Programs that open WMF files include Photoshop, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2021 and Adobe Illustrator.
