Our story
We built the tools we couldn't find
We launched Zamzar in 2006 because we needed to convert files into different
formats and couldn't find an easy way to do that. We built an online file
conversion tool, and then shared it because we thought it would help others,
too. It turns out we were right! Since then, more than 550 million people
have trusted Zamzar with their file conversions.
As technology's changed, we've changed with it. (After all, changing is kind of
our whole thing.) We've built support for more file formats and expanded to
provide additional tools, including file compression and file-editing tools.
And we've created a convenient desktop app, as well as a powerful API for
developers, so you can process files when and how you need to.
With 20 years' experience behind us, we're still just as passionate about
providing simple-to-use, high-quality tools so you can transform your files
with ease.

You're in good company
Trusted by brands you know
Zamzar is the preferred file conversion service for hundreds of thousands of people every year,
including employees at some of the world's most recognisable brands.
Zamzar's history
Twenty years of transforming files
Zamzar started its journey in 2006, when brothers Chris and Mike Whyley searched for a way to easily convert files to other formats. With no simple solution in sight, they decided to build a tool themselves. With just £1,000 seed money and a £10 marketing budget, they launched Zamzar with a mission 'to provide high-quality file conversion for as many file formats as possible'.
As one of the very first online file converters, Zamzar quickly became the go-to tool for file processing, getting mentions on popular sites of the day like Digg, TechCrunch, Lifehacker, and Wired. And by 2009, Zamzar had been named for the second year running in the Guardian's top 100 sites on the Internet. Determined to remain independent and founder-led, Zamzar continued to grow organically by focusing on developing quality file tools, designing easy-to-use products, and providing personalised customer support.
20 years later and Zamzar has expanded to support more than 200 file formats and offer almost 2500 different file-processing tools. It's now the preferred file service for hundreds of thousands of people each year, including employees of some of the world's most recognisable brands, such as the BBC, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix and Harvard University. Zamzar was named in the MakeUseOf Top 100 sites on the Web, and leading tech publications, like Lifewire and TechRadar, regularly recommend Zamzar to their readers.

Our name
The story behind Zamzar's name
The name "Zamzar" is based on a character from Franz Kafka's book, The Metamorphosis. In his famous novel, Kafka describes the extraordinary story of a young man who is "transformed whilst sleeping into a gigantic insect". I read the book at school, and was impacted by the main character, Gregor Samsa. We used his name as the basis for our company name because of its powerful association with change and transformation.
2012 saw our first contractor hire, and since then we've grown to a small but mighty team of eight. Among us are engineers with decades of experience in software design and maintenance, enterprise architecture, and infrastructure management, as well as dedicated customer support staff with years of experience with Zamzar's products. The team is supported by colleagues with expertise in areas like administrative assistance and content creation.
Through the years, we've also been joined by work experience students and interns as they start their own career journeys, with our first intern now an experienced engineer within our own team.
And just as importantly
As a team we've also:
Freed ourselves from a WW2 escape room
Competed to near international standards in shuffleboard
Taken on the crazy golf big wheel
Raced high-spec F1 cars
Supped 1940s-themed cocktails in a hidden underground station
Consumed large quantities of Christmas meals together
