WAV Audio Format

WAV Converter

The WAV audio file format was developed by IBM and Microsoft in 1991. WAV stands for Waveform Audio File Format, and it is still a commonly used file type. You can open WAV files with almost all media players and devices because it’s such an established format.

Unlike many other popular audio formats like MP3 or AAC, WAV files are uncompressed and ‘lossless’. This means WAV files have higher sound quality, which is why many musicians prefer to record and play music in WAV format. However, because the files aren’t compressed, the downside is that WAV files can be much bigger than other audio formats – up to 10 times the file size of an MP3. Most users choose to keep their digital music in MP3 or AAC format as they can store more music on their device. MP3 and AAC are also the default formats for many media players.

MP3 Audio Format

MP3 Converter

MP3 is the most common format for storing and playing digital music. It’s short for ‘MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3’, and it was developed in the early 1990s as a way of compressing audio to create smaller files that could be easily shared and stored without losing too much sound quality.

MP3 is a universal format maintained by the International Office for Standardization (ISO). MP3 tracks will play on almost any device and with most media players, including Windows Media Player and Apple Music. Digital music took off in the 1990s and 2000s, and many users used media players to ‘rip’ CDs, or download tracks from sites like Napster, turning MP3 into the most common audio format. Because MP3 uses ‘lossy’ compression that can’t be reversed, some music listeners prefer to use other formats such as FLAC, even if the file sizes are bigger.

Frequently asked questions

If you’ve got any questions about converting or compressing files with Zamzar, we’re happy to help! We’ve answered a few commonly-asked questions below, to get you started, and you can find out more information about file conversion and compression with Zamzar, in our Help centre.

The easiest way is to use an online conversion tool, such as Zamzar. Simply upload the WAV file, select MP3 as the format you want to convert to, and click 'Convert Now'. The file will then be converted in real time, without the need to download any software.

Zamzar allows you to convert two files concurrently for free, but with a paid account allows you to convert up to 100 files in one batch.

WAV files have not been compressed and tend to be high in quality, but are also large in terms of the amount of storage space that they take up. MP3 files are lower in quality, albeit still perfectly good for listening to music and other forms of audio. Importantly, they’re about a tenth of the size of a WAV file, and so are a lot more portable; this means they tend to be more widely used.

A WAV file can be prohibitively large in size – ten times larger than an MP3 file. This makes sharing and storing WAV files particularly challenging. If a WAV file has been converted to a compressed file format and then later converted back to a WAV file, then the original audio quality of that WAV file would have been lost.

Yes, is the simple answer. Simply right-click on the WAV file and select 'Open with Windows Media Player'. Once launched, click the 'Organise' button in the menu at the top. Next, click the menu item that says 'Options', followed by 'Rip Music'. Select the desired file location to save the file to, and select 'MP3' in the 'Format' section, under 'Rip settings'. Finally, click 'Apply', followed by 'Ok', and that’s how you can convert a WAV file to an MP3.
