Description Microsoft Excel is a commercial spreadsheet application written and distributed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Pre-2007 versions of Excel use XLS as the primary format for saving files. It features calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications. It has been a very widely applied spreadsheet for these platforms, especially since version 5 in 1993, and it has almost completely replaced Lotus 1-2-3 as the industry standard for spreadsheets. Excel forms part of Microsoft Office. The current versions are 2010 for Microsoft Windows and 2011 for Mac OS X.

Technical Details Microsoft Excel up until 2007 version used a proprietary binary file format called Binary Interchange File Format (BIFF) as its primary format. Used as the basis for XLS files it is a persistence format that supports authoring and manipulating content in workbooks and workbook templates. Most versions of Microsoft Excel can read CSV, DBF, SYLK, DIF, and other legacy formats.

File extension .numbers09
Category Document File
Description Files with a .numbers09 file extension are spreadsheet documents which are generated by Apple's "Numbers" application in versions 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 (these versions of the software were released between 2009-2012).

This is distinct from the numbers file produced by more modern versions of iWork.

Numbers forms part of Apple's iWork office suite, a set of applications which run on the Mac OS X and iOS operating systems, and also includes Pages (for word processing) and Keynote (for presentations).

Numbers was first released by Apple in August 2007 and allows users to perform basic spreadsheet tasks, including the manipulation of rows, columns, graphs, formulas and charts.

Technical Details At the top level iWork '09 numbers files are actually a zip file containing:
  1. An index.xml file
  2. A buildVersionHistory file
  3. A "QuickLook" directory with a "Thumbnail.jpg" of the document. The directory may also contain a PDF file named "Preview.pdf" if the user chose to save the original document with additional preview information in Numbers.
The index.xml is the core component of the file, containing the document content and all of the metadata for formatting it.

Similar to Microsoft products, the .numbers file type suffers from a lack of compatibility with other leading spreadsheet programs.
