aiff AIFF (Audio)

File extension .aiff
Category Audio File
Description The AIFF file has spanned almost four decades and it was Apple’s reply to the .WAV format that was created shortly before the AIFF file. The AIFF format is similar to the .WAV in that it is effectively a raw file – it stores audio data without compression and without any loss to quality. Unlike the .WAV, the AIFF file format never captured the public’s imagination and was not used, certainly not as extensively as a .WAV.

Technical Details The AIFF file is uncompressed which means the file size of an AIFF file is enormous, certainly compared to an MP3 file. It is around ten times the size of an MP3 and whilst there’s no doubt the sound quality of an AIFF is superior it’s not ten times as superior. This type of file is known as a lossless format for that fact there’s no loss to the quality of the file. One advantage of AIFF files is that they are almost universally supported and are able to be opened on many different OS’s and applications.

mp3 MP3 (Audio)

File extension .mp3
Category Audio File
Description MP3 is so called because it was developed by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and uses a compression known as “layer 3”. So if you put the two names together you get MP3. It was first developed in the early 90s and unlike some file formats that have fallen by the wayside the MP3 file has largely been an ever present since being developed. It’s a compressed audio file format that drove the explosion of listening to music on the go via devices known as MP3 players.

Technical Details MP3 files are around a tenth of the size of an AIFF file and that’s because an MP3 file is compressed and an AIFF file is not. Despite being compressed an MP3 file still stands up when compared to an AIFF file in terms of sound quality. The quality of an MP3 file can also be improved depending on the bit rate that has been used to compress it. i.e. a higher bit rate will mean a better quality of file.
