|Description||Files with a .numbers.zip file extension are spreadsheet documents which are generated by Apple's "Numbers" application in version 1.0 (this version of the software were released in August 2007). Technically speaking the files produced are packages, but since it is not possible to upload a package to a web service (as they are multiple files) Zamzar recommends compressing them into a ZIP file before upload.
The numbers.zip format is distinct from the numbers file produced by more modern versions of iWork which is a single file (and so does not need to be compressed).
Numbers is one of 3 programs which make up Apple's iWork office suite, a set of applications which run on the Mac OS X and iOS operating systems, also including Pages (for word processing) and Keynote (for presentations).
|Technical Details||Official file format specifications for iWork '05-'08 Numbers files are not published by Apple but there have been attempts by some developers to reverse engineer them.
Files created by Numbers in iWork '05 - '08 are not compatibile with the most recent versions of iWork. In general Numbers files cannot be opened by programs other than iWork.

|Description||Microsoft Excel is a commercial spreadsheet application written and distributed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Pre-2007 versions of Excel use XLS as the primary format for saving files. It features calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications. It has been a very widely applied spreadsheet for these platforms, especially since version 5 in 1993, and it has almost completely replaced Lotus 1-2-3 as the industry standard for spreadsheets. Excel forms part of Microsoft Office. The current versions are 2010 for Microsoft Windows and 2011 for Mac OS X.|
|Technical Details||Microsoft Excel up until 2007 version used a proprietary binary file format called Binary Interchange File Format (BIFF) as its primary format. Used as the basis for XLS files it is a persistence format that supports authoring and manipulating content in workbooks and workbook templates. Most versions of Microsoft Excel can read CSV, DBF, SYLK, DIF, and other legacy formats.|
