OBJ 3D Format OBJ Converter
An Object file (or OBJ) is a text-based 3D file format, developed by Wavefront Technologies, that represents geometry information alone. This is useful if you want to store complex data for your models, such as vertices, vertex normals and texture coordinates, in a simple format. If you need to transfer shape data between software, OBJ files are easy to parse and can be quickly read and edited by humans. The format is often used for 3D printing, as well as for sharing 3D assets during gaming or VR (virtual reality) development.
OBJ files can be opened by a variety of programs, such as Maya, Blender, Unreal Engine, Autodesk 3ds Max, and other CAD software. The format is compatible with Windows and macOS, as well as many mobile platforms, and its wide compatibility makes it a popular file choice. Its limitations lie within its strengths, however: as OBJ files only contain geometry data, if you need to share animations or material data alongside the shape data for your file, you’ll have to look for an alternative format.

USD 3D Format
The Universal Scene Description (USD) file format is an open-source 3D format created by Pixar for handling scene data for films, animations, and special effects. It was designed to manage massive, complex scene data across the entire production pipeline, with useful features for collaboration and non-destructive editing. The USD format supports both ASCII and binary encoding, with the ASCII version ideal for human readability, and the binary format best when you need compact files that are space-efficient for storage and sharing.
USD files are supported by many programs, including Houdini, Blender, Unreal Engine, Maya, and Apple AR tools. They can be used on Windows, macOS and Linux, and their wide compatibility makes them ideal for the collaborative projects they were designed for. This format does have a very high learning curve, however, so using an easier-to-parse format may be better if you’re not in the VFX business.
