FBX 3D Format

FBX Converter

FBX (Filmbox) is a proprietary 3D file format created by Kaydara in the 1990s and later acquired by Autodesk. It can be used to transfer complex 3D model and animation data between different software, making it easier to use files across your entire tech stack when working on projects. 3D assets like geometry, materials and complex animations can all be stored in a single file.

The FBX format can be read as a text file or a binary file, and it can be opened and used by Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max, Blender, Cinema 4D, Unreal Engine, and many other programs. Its wide compatibility makes it one of the de facto choices for moving 3D data between programs, and it’s a format that’s commonly used in the film and gaming industries. It’s only rivalled by the glTF format in this regard.

3DS 3D Format

3DS Converter

3D Studio (3DS) is a legacy file format used by Autodesk’s 3ds Max 3D modelling software. It was used in the 1990s before being replaced by Autodesk’s MAX format in 1996. Although MAX is the newer format, you can still open and edit 3DS files through Autodesk 3ds Max and Blender. With them, you can store complete 3D scenes and models, and export the files to transfer the contents between different software with little difficulty.

Autodesk 3ds Max is one of the industry standards for 3D models and scenes, so the 3DS file format has a wide range of use cases, from drawing up architectural schematics to building levels for a video game. And while 3DS files are now superseded by the MAX files, you’ll still come across them frequently if you’re working with a large archive of 3D files.
