The TEX format is used for LaTeX source documents. LaTeX is pronounced ‘Lah-tech’ or ‘Lay-tech’. It was built on the earlier TeX system and is an open-source typesetting system that was first released in 1984. The system is now maintained by the LaTeX Project Group. LaTeX is commonly used for scientific and technical files for academic researchers and professionals working in industry fields including mathematics, computer science, engineering, physics, and chemistry. LaTeX also supports non-Latin scripts. The LaTeX document preparation system is available as a free software download for most operating systems. However, if you want to open a TEX file without this software, you should be able to open it with most text editors, including Microsoft Notepad and Apple TextEdit, as the file format uses plain text. There are also several other applications available that are specifically designed to work with LaTeX files, such as TeXworks and Texmaker.
