DescriptionHTML5 is the fifth revision of the HTML standard, it's main aims are to improve the support for the all types of multimedia with the intention to keep it readable by both humans, computers and all devices. HTML5 has become the adopted standard following Apple CEO Steve Jobs very open letter entitled 'Thoughts on Flash' where he concludes that 'Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content' and that 'new open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win'.

Technical DetailsHTML5 introduces new elements that are not present in previous versions of HTML. It is now no longer based on SGML, it is designed to be backwards compatible with previous older versions of HTML. HTML5 specifies scripting APIs that can be used with both Javascript and the Document Object Model (DOM). There are also a number of new APIs to include: Canvas Element for 2D drawing, Timed Media playback, Document Editing, Drag and Drop, Web Storage amongst others. HTML5 attempts to make semantic replacements for uses of generic elements e.g. footer, audio and video rather than div, span or object.
