LRF eBook Format

LRF Converter

The LRF ebook format contains information for a Sony BroadBand eBook (BBeB), and was developed for Sony Reader devices with electronic paper displays. LRF files are sometimes known as Sony Portable Reader Files. The structure of an LRF file is a container format for compressed XML files, comprising the text and images in the book, as well as digital instructions to the device on how they should be displayed on the Sony Reader. The file will also contain information about the author, title and publishing dates.

The Sony Reader has since been discontinued but it used the LRF file type for unencrypted files and the LRX format for encrypted files. Sony have now made EPUB their default ebook format, but you should still be able to open LRF ebooks with Calibre ereader software.

PDB Converter

The PDB format name is short for Palm Desktop Database. Palm was a popular personal desktop assistant (PDA) brand from the mid-1990s up until 2011. PDAs like Palm and BlackBerry were a precursor to smartphones. There were several programs on Palm devices which used the PDB format, including word processors, database or spreadsheet applications, and the Palm ereaders. You can find out what type of program a PDB was created with by opening the file in a text editor.

As smartphones have now replaced PDAs, people tend to use these or a separate ereader for reading ebooks. The PDB format also didn’t have digital rights management (DRM) for authors and publishers to copy-protect their work. While Palm devices are no longer being sold, you can still get the Palm Desktop application for Windows. Other ways of viewing PDB files include with Calibre’s ereader software, or with the XnViewMP graphics application.
