Description ODP or OpenOffice Presentation is the default file type created by the presentation application known as Impress, which is part of the OpenOffice suite of productivity software. Similar in usage and appearance to the market leader, Microsoft Powerpoint, Impress is open source and free to download and use. Despite the similarities, Powerpoint is widely seen as the superior product. Impress allows the user to add text, images, graphics and 3D clip art to slides.

Technical Details The OpenOffice Presentation file format was developed by the OASIS industry consortium. Files are saved and compressed using ZIP compression which generally makes the file size smaller than the equivalent file created by Microsoft Powerpoint and saved as a PPT file. Usually the file will consist of an XML file, directories and thumbnails. By utilising an open source compression technique, it is often possible to repair partially corrupted files. It is also possible for advanced users to edit the rate of compression, therefore achieving higher compression ratios.

Technical Details A large part of any presentation is how the text enters, appears and exits the screen. Entrance, emphasis, and exit of elements on a slide itself are controlled by what PowerPoint calls Custom Animations Transitions. These can be animated in a variety of ways. For example you can customise the animation to create small story boards by animating pictures to enter, exit or move. With different type of callouts, speech bubbles with edited text can be sent on and off to create speech. The overall design of a presentation can dictate how all the other slides appear and operate, this is called a master slide. Everything from design to the text on the slide can be edited using a primitive outliner.
