Device / Program Zune
Category Video File
Description Zune was a range of portable media players developed by Microsoft. First released in November 2006. The devices were marketed as a rival to Apple's iPod range but failed to gain a significant slice of the market. The initial Zune models relied on a button pad to navigate the menus, however the Zune HD, the final Zune product, featured a touch screen. The Zune is primarily used to listen to music and watch video content. Unlike the iPod, the Zune features a radio receiver. The Zune HD has a WiFi connectivity and allows the user to browse the web. The Zune allows a small number of third party apps to be downloaded from the Zune Marketplace. However new apps ceased to be released after August 2011, with Microsoft encouraging users to switch to Windows Phone products instead. Zune was also the name for Microsoft's digital media store, which has since be renamed to Xbox Music.

Technical Details The Zune range featured screens that varied in size and resolution. Earlier devices had a screen of just 1.8 inches with the Zune HD featuring a 3.3 inch screen. The Zune HD supports a resolution of up to 480x272 with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The Zune HD supports a number of video formats including WMV, MP4, H.264 and VC-1. H.264 is the recommended video encoding to use with AAC audio encoding. Users wishing to compress video for Zune devices should be aware of the specific maximum resolution for the target model and size video accordingly. The Zune HD supports up to 30 frames per second.

Technical Details MOV files use a proprietary compression algorithm and each track that is held within the file is made up of an encoded media stream or a reference to a media stream that is located in another file - this allows the embedding of existing media. QuickTime player which was developed and created by Apple allows a user to open and play .MOV files and later version of QuickTime Player, such as QuickTime Pro allows the user to edit and export .MOV files.
