CAF Audio Format CAF Converter
The CAF format is a type of audio file developed by Apple, and the name is short for Core Audio File. As well as audio, CAF files can contain metadata like text annotations, markers and channel layouts. This makes CAF similar to the WAV format. However, WAV files have a size limit of 4GB, while CAF files don’t have this limit, meaning they can contain audio data with longer playback durations. CAF files can also store different audio formats, not just one type like MP3, and can have multiple audio channels.
CAF is an Apple proprietary format, and it’s designed specifically for devices using iOS and OS X. If you’re using an Apple device, you can open CAF files using the free Apple QuickTime Player and GarageBand apps, or the paid Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro apps. If you don’t have an Apple device, you can open CAF files for free with VLC Media Player or Audacity. There are also some WAV editors that support CAF audio.

AC3 Audio Format AC3 Converter
The AC3 (Audio Codec 3) file format was developed by Dolby Laboratories, and is an audio format designed to support surround sound. The format can include up to six separate channels of audio output - one for each of the five speakers in a surround sound setup, plus one for a subwoofer. AC3 files use Dolby Digital lossy compression technology, which maintains sound quality even with a reduced file size.
Although this file format was originally developed for audio in cinemas, it now has many other uses, such as in digital video streaming and TV broadcasting, for DVD and Blu-ray discs, and for video game consoles. The format’s reduced file size makes it ideal for storing and distributing - e.g. on a DVD or Blu-ray disc. An AC3 file can be opened by many different media players, including Apple QuickTime, Windows Media Player, and VLC.
